Majordomo — Magazine Spread Design

Overview
As a part of an Art Center Extension course project, I translated an online article into a branded magazine spread.

I chose a feature on Dave Chang's, at the time, new LA restaurant, Majordomo. I designed the spread to reflect Chang's unique culinary style and the history of food and culture in LA as an homage to the city that inspired my love for cooking.

Background
As a preliminary project, I explored myriad fonts and typefaces to find one that best conveys the article's mood. I then studied numerous references for images and inspirations to help tie everything together to turn the online article into a compelling spread that would keep the reader engaged.

I also shot some images featured in the photo section myself because I wanted to include specific images of the restaurant and the surrounding Chinatown area.

Some of my favorite spreads are below:

I have Dave Chang's Majordomo cookbook and love the food photography and curation of images in it. I used these images as anchor points and supplemented them with warm-toned photos that best represent LA's feelings from my perspective to tie in all the city's other food cultures and climates.

For the central spread of the magazine, I wanted to showcase LA’s diverse food sprawl by weaving together unique dishes from various cuisines with a landscape of the downtown skyline.

As someone who loves images in magazines, I wanted to make them the focal point while using the text to provide structure and guide the reader toward the hero imagery. Supplementing the larger macro images with micro ones also was a way to offer more dynamism.
