Tadao Ando: LACMA Museum Identity

Overview
I created a museum ID system for Tadao Ando at LACMA as a part of my final Art Center Extension course final project. The ID system included an exhibit poster, ticket, and mobile app experience.

When deciding on which architect, I fell in love with Tadao Ando because of his incorporation of the natural elements of light, water, and flora into his architectural designs. For this project, I wanted to explore how to translate these elements into exhibit assets.

Background
When starting this project, what stood out to me the most were the materials Ando used to create his structures and buildings.

Most notable was his concrete style. Ando cared to craft his concrete so that it was perfectly smooth, and with the history of woodworking in Japan, this was possible, resulting in the famous holes from the bolts that hold the shuttering together.

Concrete became the central theme across the poster, tickets, and mobile app.

Ando was heavily influenced by how light and nature changed the feeling within the spaces he built, and I wanted to reflect that with the poster design. I designed the posters to be displayed outside, getting direct sunlight. The small grid holes are die-cut and layered over the outside wall to capture the light, representing Ando's famous concrete style. Similarly, Ando's name would be raised and printed with spot-UV texture to capture the light as it shifts.

I wanted to provide some nuance with the ticket design as Ando did with his architectural plans. I chose Futura, a geometric font, so that I could shift some of the letterings to the other side as a way to create that feeling.

To help guide visitors through the exhibit, I designed the app experience to be as simple and easy as possible.

Inspired by Ando's geometric designs, I overlaid content into an eight-column grid system. Black, white, and gray are the primary colors to tie everything together with the concrete theme.
